Communication with the spirit world is a fasinating area of study and research. Unfortunately, interaction with the beyond is somewhat rare. One method of communication used is electronic voice phenomena (EVP).
EVP is the process of recording a spirit voice on tape. Many ghost hunters have recorded on tape what they believe are spirit voices of the deceased. There are a few paranormal organizations that work almost exclusively with EVP and more individuals are attempting to record EVP every year.
The recorder can be either a digital format or audio tape, but we prefer the time tested value of tape over digital at this point and time. Digital recorders are still relatively new and digital static is a real possibility. We prefer to use full sized audio tape recorders because they deliver a better sound quality than a micro cassette or hand held recorder. If you are uncertain of the quality of your recorder try the following simple test. Turn the volume of your recorder to high then turn it back down just a hair. Record for two or three minutes and play back the tape recording. You should be able to hear the natural background noises without a lot of squeaks and squeals.
There are several different approaches to recording EVP. The most common approach is to leave your recorder in one place and record for the entire investigation. This method uses a lot of tape and can become very boring to listen to. You also have a better than average chance of missing something on the tape because your mind will tend to wander after listening for too long.
The second method is to record for short periods of time (say 10 minutes) several times during the investigation. This shortened method is much less boring to listen to and allows you to record in several different locations on a single tape.
The third method is much like the second except that you ask questions and wait for an answer before asking your next question. You may ask a question like "Are there any spirits here?" or "What is your name?". After you ask a question pause for ten or fifteen seconds before continuing with your next question. You may be surprised when you replay the tape to here your question answered.
Be sure to record in an area where there are no other investigators to be sure what you record is valid. Also, be aware that EVP can not be proven. Skeptics will always be able to say that the voices were staged or are simply the voices of the researchers themselves. If you choose to record EVP you will be doing so for your own personal satisfaction.
Another method used to communicate with the spirit world is the seance. A seance is an organized sitting for the purpose of receiving spirit communications using the services of a medium. The medium and the sitters usually sit around a table with their hands flat on the table and fingers touching.
I have witnessed a seance that was successful but I would warn against using a seance to communicate with the dead. There are several areas of concern when using a seance.
The first is the validity of the seance itself. A seance is not a scientifically accepted investigation method, therefore any information gathered from the seance will not be accepted as real evidence.
The second area for concern is fraud by the medium that is conducting the seance. Some mediums are just out to make a dollar so beware. Unless you personally know the medium be sure to check them out before the seance to avoid any bad surprises.
Our final concern is the seance and it's after effects. I have seen mediums and sitters in pain during a seance and energy that was summoned that did not leave once the seance was finished. The haunted house in Sylvania Ohio is a good example of what can happen after a seance has ended. Unless you know what you are doing, don't play around with a seance. If you do, be ready to face the consequences.
Another common method used to communicate is the Ouija board. Not only are Ouija boards not a scientifically accepted form of research but they are potentially dangerous as well. Spirits who may not be telling you the truth are often contacted through the use of the Ouija board. We would recommend the Ouija board not be used by the paranormal investigator.
